Jacob R. Powell

Attorney

Current Practice: Jacob joined this firm in 2006 after working for the previous year as a law clerk at the Fourth District Court.  Since that time, Jacob has been developing a general practice including family law, real estate, evictions, collections, and criminal defense.  Jacob's philosophy is that the most valuable service a lawyer can offer are (1) a clear explanation of their legal rights and (2) an objective and realistic analysis of the risks, costs, and benefits of enforcing or defending those rights.  After those two steps, Jacob provides appropriate representation to ensure that his client's realistic expectations are met.

Education: In 1999, Jacob earned a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Brigham Young University.  He continued on to earn an M.S. in Computer Science at the same university, which he completed in 2003 while attending law school.  In 2004, Jacob earned his J.D. from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.

Admitted to Practice: 2005, Utah Supreme Court.  2005, United States Patent and Trademark Office.  2006, California Supreme Court.

Legal Experience: During law school, Jacob completed an internship in Frankfurt, Germany with the international office of general counsel for the LDS Church and an internship with the Sandy City Attorney's office.  Jacob also worked during law school for the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University.  After graduating from law school in December 2004, Jacob worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Anthony W. Schofield in Utah's Fourth Judicial District Court.

Foreign Languages: Hungarian (fluent); French (highly proficient); Russian (highly proficient); Spanish (able to read/write); German (able to read/write); Arabic (able to read/write)

Other Interesting Notes: Jacob's interests and hobbies are broad and varied, including writing music, computer programming, learning foreign languages, and studying history.  Jacob first became interested in the practice of law in Budapest, Hungary, where he was serving as a full-time volunteer missionary.  He saw that those who are unfamiliar with the law frequently have their rights ignored and are rarely given a sound explanation of what they can and cannot do legally.  Jacob particularly enjoys being able to give clients clear and simple explanations of legal concepts that reduce an otherwise complicated and possibly intimidating situation into a manageable set of business decisions.
